External HDD

Post by LeslieG on Mon 15 Feb 2010 - 19:56

I wish to buy my wife an external HDD drive. She has so many pictures of our grandchildren inparticular the 11 month old daughter of our youngest son that her computer is weighed down with them. An external 500gig would fill the bill so she can take the hard drive to them when we visit and show them the pictures she has taken.
Doting Grandmother syndrome.....I believe that is the medical term

Les

I bought one of these from my local Tesco a few months back although it was only £60ish at the time.

You can have either a desktop style drive which needs a main adapter & offer high capacity or a true portable drive which is powered via the usb cable. These tend to offer lower capacity and cost that wee bit more as well

Hello :)
Personally I'd go with SATA HD Docking station.
When the drive is full, you just swap to the next.

Hello :)
The real advantage here is eSATA.
Even if you have to invest in a PCI addon.
Not only store pictures (USB is adequate here).
[See the sticky comparison of USB vs SATA.]
But build a movie library too. Thumbs up

I do a lot of eSATA swapping for backups and such. I use an Addonics Diamond system (with many drive cages)... I also have an IcyDock USB+eSATA enclosure... I recently picked up a 640GB USB2 Samsung S2 portable hard drive to tote with my netbook... Slower than eSATA (obviously), but with a netbook, it is perfect. Sometimes I wish I had an eSATA drive "toaster", but I'd need something to store the bare drives in.

LMAO, I loved that one Alex, my culinary skills have stalled somewhat, I have not progressed a great deal. At the moment I am a "one dish wonder"

I'm a bit late in this thread.

I have bought 2 of these, Welland Hard Drive Docks.

http://www.shopbot.com.au/pp-welland-external-2-53-5-sata-hard-drive-dock-esatausb-2-0-price-227915.html

Will take up to 1.5TB Internal HD, I use it for storing my movies. Just plug and play. :D
works great, highly reccomend them.

esata is definately faster.

Hello :)
Shame they are out of stock.
Unlike Novatech.
For £10 more you can have 1TB Sammie.
Both the MJ & 1TB are in stock too.

No mention on the site if you get a sequin covered white glove with it though so that you don't get finger prints all over the case rotflmao
