Will you get/have you got an SSD yet?
Will you get an SSD?
Hi :)
Just wondering if anybody is tempted or already has gone with SSD.
For their storage purposes.

Hi all ,
I was seriously considering going to SSD drive and Windows7 prior to Xmas. But the more i look and research the more my current plans seemed to not fit. I was planning to buy a Samsung 64GB drive , 220 read , 200 write. But i would be unable to cut down my current OS installations to fit on a 64GB drive. I have currently 110GB of used space with the OS , so with all the info to mind I would need a 128GB or larger to make it a wise investment. So for now I am sticking with Vista64 and have ordered a Samsung F3 1TB drive to use as the primary OS drive replacing a 500GB Maxtor22DiamondMax. I should see a good 30mbs speed increase which is good for the low investment i think.
I am now prepared to wait until a reasonable amount of space is affordable on the SSD front.

There should be a place in the poll to put a tick against, WHAT IS A SSD DRIVE

Here's a site which has some good info about storage (not just SSD)
http://www.storagesearch.com/ssd-storage-glossary.html
Of course if this poll had been created by Zebs there would have been the above option and others
Re: Will you get an SSD?
Hello :)
Firstly only ask a question when you already know the answer...
The poll is basic .... See post 2.

Re: Will you get an SSD?
After reading post # 5 and also the link, that is not basic to me. :) Happy days.
Re: Will you get an SSD?
Wow I only just got rid of my 5 1/4" floppies.
Actually its a lie, I still have some to go with my Beeb model B. First computer I ever owned (used the kids as an excuse to get one) and its hard to let it go.

I am still using a raid0 setup on my new system but the one difference is that it is comprised of 2 OCZ Vertex 60GB SSD's.
It is blazing fast as far as I am concerned.
Here is a shot using HD TUNE.

Re: Will you get an SSD?
I plan on getting one soon. I almost pulled the trigger on one the other day but bought something else that I felt would be put to better use for now. I plan on moving my primary OS (Win 7) onto the SSD and that is about it.
Re: Will you get an SSD?
I had a 128 GB in my old PC and it was a PIA. There are way too many stupid programs that must be installed on drive C:
The new PC's C: drive is a 1 TB 7200 SATA II drive that boots pretty quick, backed up by a 1 TB data drive where all my documents, music, pictures and videos sit.
A SATA III 5900 2TB stores mass data, and 3TB SATA III 7200 drive supports my big downloads.
The 3TB drive was to be the OS/Data drive but it took Seagate add-on software for Win 7 to read it as 3TB.
All in all, 7TBs suites me fine. Please keep those tiny SSDs away from me!

Re: Will you get an SSD?
The OCZ Vertex 2 120 GB SSD drive in my build crashed about a month ago. They RMA'd it with no issues, but I replaced it with a faster Corsair Force Series GT 120 GB SATA 2.5-Inch SATA III Solid State Drive.
I was shocked the OCZ failed as there are no moving parts in an SSD. They are still electronic devices and they fail when they fail with no reason often. I'm hoping the Corsair lasts longer.

Re: Will you get an SSD?
In two years, SSDs will be old tech. I have seen the new ReRAM disks.

Re: Will you get an SSD?
I have 6 of them already, you cant go back to platter drive once you have an SSD
Re: Will you get an SSD?
Well its true, I could never have a platter drive for anything else than Data or Storage and even then I would buy a SATA6.0 platter drive.
Re: Will you get an SSD?
I'm not yet ready to adopt SSD. I don't think a file system is out that is optimized for the technology. I have interest, sure, but I don't trust them with my data. I'd say HDD were cheap... but cheaper and you can backup to more. Thought about getting one as a boot drive for Windows, but decided against it for now. Got too many other wants/needs.

Darn Tracy its 2012, when are you going to be ready, the price have dropped dramaticly and they are the future of storage, get one already. The wife wont beat you too bad. :D :DSithTracy wrote:I'm not yet ready to adopt SSD. I don't think a file system is out that is optimized for the technology. Re: Will you get an SSD?
The boot time alone make it worth it to me.
Primary OS = SSD
Data = HDD in RAID 1

Re: Will you get an SSD?
get a LGA 2011 Asus Sabertooth, it has SSD caching for your platter drives, a touch of a button and they are 3X times faster.

Hi :)
I'd be reluctant to get these.
Reliability a big issue long term.
