Bit nervous guys....

Got to drive to town for a follow-up hearing test (through work). Probably courtesy of being too close to guys use cut-off saws cutting through pipes without wearing earmuffs when I was younger. Also got some ringing in one ear. Tinnitus I think it's called. I know there are worse things In life that can happen, but it doesn't stop you being scared.

Well... time to go. It's a 20 minute drive to town as we are located on the coast. Back soon.

Pardon

Sorry Couldn't resist.

Good luck - I know that we have only just taken Hearing protection seriously in the last couple of years at work due to much noisier systems - before that nobody really bothered about ear plugs or defenders.

Well, I'm back.

Thanks guys. Good one Alex (cheeky bugger !!)
Good and bad news. Whilst the hearing is down, not down enough
to warrant any aids... not yet anyway. Give it a few years.
The tinnitus might have to be looked at by a specialist. It can't be cured but managed. Weird what causes it.. coffee, salt, stress, High Blood pressure, even probs with your jaw or neck can set it off.
Relieved.... heaps. phew!
Also for the cost hearing aids can start at almost $2000 AU. Protect
your ears boys & girls !!

Hi :)
Was going to say good luck, but it is over already.
Glad it wasn't as bad as it could've been.
In the UK the NHS would cover basic hearing aids.
So free.
Even supply batteries for life.

Half ya luck Zeb.
Not sure what the story is here in Aus. Maybe after I retire I might get assistance. Even getting batteries for nix is good.

Hey Alby late as always. Glad to here it is not as serious as you thought it may be.

I have had hearing problems on and off for years. when a child i was always getting earaches and ear infections.
When 20 i had surgery for the ustation tubes in my ears cause they were not draining properly so i was having dificulty hearing. I am now 46 and have had the surgery 8 times. They call it cronic usation tube malfunction.

It is apparently quite common in young kids?

I also have worked in the construction industry on and off for many years and have been exposed to very loud machinery and power tools. I think in my case the damage has already been done. Enough about me...

Hope they can help ya get the ringing under control. :)

You know Joel... I have the same problem and there has been talk about tubing my ears. My oldest had it three times since she was an infant. I think it is time to move south! Last year I was deaf in one ear because of an weird burst in ear wax. Guess I had some inflamed sinus cavity. They had to irrigate my ear and OUCH!! That was painful. I hear just fine, but when the girls are all fighting in my house sometimes I wish I had a switch to turn off the old ears!!

What I've got is nothing compared to what you guys have gone through....Mines just like when you come home from a loud concert,
everything's quiet and your ears are 'ringing'. But there are worse ones like whooshing sounds etc that are bad. I'm lucky.
To have operations mate.... wow.
And yes... I have been accused of having selective hearing especially
When the footy or cricket's on the TV , even from my daughters.

Funniest part of all the surgery I have had is that i have now gone almost 10 years without surgery and have not had any problems.

But after the last surgery the whole in the ear drum where the tube is inserted never closed up after the tube came out so now if i plug my nose and blow my ear whistles.

I have to wear an ear plug to shower or swim which is a PITA!

Sith i had that done a few times as a kid and oh ya it hurts when they irrigate the ears... :face:

Ever heard of this one?
When I was young and had an earache my mum would pour warm olive oil in it and plug it with some cotton wool....... it worked.

Tinnitus can be quite annoying. In the Fall of 2008 I suffered for a few months with it and then it went away on its own. I had my hearing checked and everything. My cardiovascular health was good so nothing wrong there. They finally settled on stress being the culprit, but to this day i have no idea what triggered it. I don't work in a loud work environment though the sharp sound of the alarms on the baby cardiac monitors in my NICU could have done it. Who knows. There is a natural supplement that is supposed to help with the condition called melatonin maybe can help, and is found in the vitamin supplement aisle of the grocery store. It's worth at least investigating.

Oh so you are cruising for a bruising too, eh?

My Son had ear infections from the time he was 5 months old until i finally was able to convince the pediatrician when he was 18 months old that enough was enough! It seemed like every other month he was sick! When they finally tubed both of his ears, he finally stopped having the ear infections. What a relief. Moving South won't help! Washing hands and cleaning the counters will. Also anatomy doesn't help. My son also had to have his adenoid tonsils removed which were contributing to his chronic ear infections. Then when my son was 3 yrs old he had his regular tonsils removed too because he was having trouble eating and they were literally kissing each other, that's how swelled up they were in his throat. Poor little kid, but at least now he is healthy!

Feeling relieved more than anything. Had the 'ringing' for a couple of years now.
I'm used to it being there.

Wow.. Alby.. I hope i didn't sound trite. It is a bothersome thing to have going on especially when you're so acutely aware of the ringing all the time. I do feel for you! 🐱
